Pagan cultThe word “pagan“ comes from the Latin "paganus" and literally “villager“ means; but pagan is an expression that the Christians use very much to refer to all those persons whose religious beliefs are different from the most well-known (Christianity, Judaism and Islam). The pagan thing had his origin in the imperial Roman epoch, where the Christianity turned into the official religion of the empire and generally this term was used for the purpose of qualifying and chasing to the ancient religions caractristias of Europe. Bearing in mind this it is important to say that we pay them they were considered to be unbelievers to the religion, but these were differing from the heretics since according to the church an unbeliever is a person whom the Christian doctrine was not taught in a correct way or, they do not know it, and the heretics are those that are against of the same one; we do this difference because many people believe that what is pagan is synonymous of heresy, but this is not like that. What is pagan is not against of the Christianity, simply he has adopted a doctrine completely different from that of this religion. Due to this, in the epoch of the Holy Inquisition all those persons who were practising this type of things, were chased, judged and executed, that is to say that the church was opposed in this epoch, and also it is opposed in this one, to everything what has to do with what is pagan. Another pagan's definition is the adoration to the ancient gods; those persons who were dedicating his devotion to the ancient Gods of the Greek and Roman pantheons, especially when this cult disappeared of the cities to shelter in small peoples; in fact, the imperial rights of those epoch, they speak of against the ancient religion defining his faithful as pagans. We cannot ignore either that the pagan term was much used by the Christian currents to name others that although it is they who are considered themselves as Christian religions, realize some practices that have a lot to do with the pagan thing. For example, the iconoclasts were thinking how pagan to the cult that it usually give good results to the images or statues and on the other hand, for many Protestant propagandists, the cult that the catholic church of Rome dedicates the saints, is a form of pagan practice. Another definition of very common paganism in this epoch especially, is the occultism; bearing in mind the characteristics of the occultism, the same one expires with all the requisites to enter inside the comprehension of the pagan's definition. What is a pagan?
The pagans are considered to be ancient polytheists what means that a person who devotes herself to what is pagan believes in more than one God, and as the previous definition, they produce cult to the ancient religions; those persons who are devotees of religions or saints who come from tribes or indigenous civilizations also are considered to be pagans, where the rituals base on the invocation of the gods, the use of lucky charms and all those ones that base on beliefs typical of the animism. As well we said previously, answering to the question: "What is a pagan?" the pagan persons neither belong nor share the beliefs of the principal religions, but it is important to bear in mind that the definition of principal religion is ambiguous because for example, the Buddhism or the Taoism do not belong to the strongest religions, but nevertheless they cannot be considered to be pagans since they do not qualify as such; finally there exists a definition that understands the pagan person like atheists, agnostics and humanists, although at present, the pagan term is not already used any more to define these persons. |
